As you know, I have just returned from Peru, where with a group of parishioners we worked with a minister (Rev. Anderson Sanchez) in his church, which is located in the slums of Lima. To say that this trip was a life changing experience is an understatement. No amount of photographs or filming could explain or show what we saw and encountered. The extreme poverty and lack of basic human needs, which we all take for granted, is astonishing. Yet, even amongst awful living conditions, the locals are content and full of appreciation for what they do have.
‘From a distance’, we have no idea what it is like to live there and have no understanding of what it takes to survive. However, we can learn so much from the people we met and be full of appreciation for what we do have.
The present day hymn writer John Rutter has penned a hymn called “Look at the World”. The lines of the chorus of this hymn are:
Praise to thee o lord for all creation
give us thankful hearts that we may see
all the gifts we share and every blessing
all things come of thee.
We must at all times and in all places offer God our praise and thanksgiving. We need to stand in amazement at what God has given to us, and the Grace that He has poured into all our lives – no matter how bad we think things are.
Please let me encourage you to never take for granted all that God has given to us, most especially the gift of His Son, who died for each of us. As a result of this act of love and sacrifice, each of us has the option of being able to be in Heaven when our time comes to leave this world. This is a choice we need to make, no one can make it for us, it is a personal decision. Ask the Lord Jesus into your life, because He truly loves you. As I continually said in Peru to everyone I had the opportunity to speak with ‘Jesus Cristo te ama’ (Jesus loves you). Once you realise and experience the love of God in your life, you will never regret the decision you made, and will truly be able to ‘Praise the Lord of all creation’.
