We arrived safe and well yesterday morning at our accommodation at 3am and all 12 suitcases with us.  For this we are truly thankful.  Yesterday morning after breakfast we had a service of Holy Communion and then sorted the extra suitcases that we brought with us.  Again I am so overwhelmed by the generosity of all the people who have supported us in this mission trip.  Just before lunch we went for a short walk to try and catch our bearings.  For the first three nights of this trip we are staying in a small convent in the Miraflores area of Lima.  On Monday we will move to the convent we used before.
Yesterday afternoon Anderson came to pick us up and took us to a Mission Church in the San Juan Miraflores region of Lima.  We were introduced to Rev. Rueben and his wife.  The have been Pastoring this congregation for the past 1 and half years.  His music group was also there and they led us in a time of worship - all in Spanish of course.
It was 7:30pm by the time we got back to the Convent for our evening meal.  The hosts introduced the team to a Latin American Pie called Impanada.  The Nuns found it quite amusing that we all (except Heather) didn't like the olives in it.
To say we were all tired was an understatement so it was early to bed with lights out by 9pm.
This morning Anderson is collecting us at 8am.  I am preaching in San Pedro Church at the 9am Service.
Please continue to pray for us as we continue on this wonderful journey.
  • All the travelling that we will do over the next 2 weeks
  • For me as I preach today in San Pedro Church
  • For our health that none of us will get sick from the change in food or water
  • For our safety in both work and free time
  • For our spiritual protection
  • For Anderson, Isabel and the congregations we will be working amongst
  • For our families and friends back home who are supporting us
  • For opportunities to share the Gospel and that people will come to a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
  • That we will remember enough of the Spanish that we have been learning - we need the gift of tongues!
  • With Thanksgiving for our safe arrival, for our cases also being on the plane, for the Community of Sisters who are hosting us
  • Most importantly that the name of Jesus will be glorified in all that we do and say

I type this thought at about 36000 feet above the ground on our flight from Toronto to Lima.  This morning we left Strabane Rectory at about 5:45am and made the journey to Dublin Airport.  We flew from Dublin to Toronto and had just shy of a 3 hour lay over.  It was good to stretch the legs and drink a Tim Horton's Coffee and eat a doughnut.  The journey has been good this far.
Now that we are on the last leg of the journey my mind turns to what awaits us.  I must confess that I am really looking forward to seeing my friend and brother in the Lord, Anderson again.  It will be good to see the progress in the San Pedro and Cristo Redentor congregations and also to renew the friendships with the parishioners of those churches.
Please pray for each of us on the team and especially for:
  • All the travelling that we will do over the next 2 weeks
  • For each member of the team (Sammy and Rachel, Ruth and Joanne, Emma, Heather (my mum) and Me.
  • Most importantly that the name of Jesus will be glorified in all that we do and say

I love the summer, the clearer evenings, the (occasional) good weather day.  Somehow when the Sun is out everyone seems to be a little bit more cheery and happier.  As you know, every year since I arrived in the parish we have a Church Picnic at the Beach after morning worship.  This year it is Sunday 2nd July.  This is always a good event, and seems to be enjoyed by everyone who comes along – no matter what the weather is like.  We have had wind, rain, cold, and sunshine, but yet we still enjoy the fellowship with each other.
One of the many things which I love about our Church family is the willingness to share.  At the beach, car boots are opened, and boxes containing sandwiches, crisps, buns etc are handed around everyone.  The food, tea/coffee, milk, juice etc. is shared amongst each other.
In the bible we read about a picnic of a different kind.  Each of the four Gospels gives us the account of the Feeding of the 5000.   In this passage we read about a multitude of people needing fed, and Jesus tells them to sit down on the grass.  He prays over the bread and fish and it is distributed among the people.  We are told that whenever the ‘picnic’ was finished and all the spare food was gathered up there was enough left to fill 12 baskets.  In John’s account of the Feeding of the 5000 we read that the fish and bread came from a boy who was willing to share with others.
One thing which so often is overlooked is what was initially provided.  I am sure that the disciples wondered to themselves and asked ‘what use is this amount to so many people?’ (John 6:9).  However, this was all it took – five barley loaves and two fish.
Do you ever think that your gift and capabilities are insignificant?  As long as we give our best, no matter how insignificant we may feel, God can take it and use it to feed 5000 souls.  However, no matter what we offer, we must offer it in faith and love.  This is the Jesus model and after all look at what God did for us.
God offered his Son in the fullness of faith and love for you and for me – for us all.  He gave his life as a ransom for us all (Mark 10:45).  I know we didn’t ask God to make such an offering, but I for one am so thankful that he did.  It is through Faith in Jesus and Love for Him that we can receive the greatest reward of all – the gift of Eternal Life.
God sent his Son, They called him Jesus;
he came to love, heal and forgive;
he lived and died to buy my pardon,
an empty grave is there to prove my Saviour lives.
(Church of Ireland Hymnal 2000 - Hymn 669)
